Home Improvement: Building Energy Efficient Homes with Energy ...

Aside from using LED bulbs and energy-efficient home appliances, you can also save energy by using energy efficient windows.

You see, style, size, and durability are not the only factors which must be considered when choosing stuff you?d want to be part of your home. When it comes to windows, you should also consider energy-efficiency.

Picture this. Your air conditioning system at home is already on full blast but you can still feel the heat of the sun?s rays. Or your heating system is on but you can?t feel the supposed warmth and coziness of your home sweet home. When these circumstances happen, the culprit may be your windows. If only you had energy efficient windows, you wouldn?t have to leave your air conditioning or heating system on 24/7 and you would be able to enjoy whatever ?home weather? you?d wish for.

Basically, energy efficient windows are those which have a low U-factor, a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), and high R value. U-value is the rate of non-solar heat flow through a window while R value measures the ability of a window to resist heat flow. If your window has a high R value and a low U factor, that means it can prevent heat from escaping from the inside of your home during the cold weather, when you?re using your heating system.

On the other hand, SHGC measures the amount of solar radiation (sun?s heat) which can pass through your window. If your window has low SHGC, it means that it is effective in blocking off the heat of the sun and it reduces its warming effect to your home during summer or warm weather.

In addition to checking the mentioned indicators of efficiency, you also have to see to it that your windows carry the Energy Star label. The most recommended energy-efficient windows are uPVC windows.
