Council grant helps Blackburn business grow and create jobs

A ?40,000 grant from Blackburn with Darwen Council has helped a Blackburn company create new business and jobs.

Michael Davies and Associates Ltd (MDA), based on Queen Victoria Street, was awarded the grant by the Council as part of its Your Call Open for Business campaign which supports businesses, growth and job creation.

The company is an award-winning leading provider of marketing services. Since being founded in 1987 it has grown to become a major force in the procurement and fulfilment of promotional merchandise and marketing PoS items, as well as contract packing and handling for multi-component projects, warehousing and distribution.

The company successfully partners and supports major brands including Bacardi, Coca-Cola, Cadburys, Car Phone Warehouse and Virgin Trains.

MDA already has two distribution centres in Mill Hill and has recently acquired another new warehouse space on Walker Industrial Park in Blackburn.

The funds were used to help undertake property improvements at the new site, including the installation of new offices and warehouse racking.

It is hoped that this investment alongside other positive changes will increase turnover and allow the company to grow. Five new jobs have already been created and a further 26 positions safeguarded.

Assistance to Industry grants are delivered on behalf of the Council by Regenerate Pennine Lancashire.

They are awarded to companies to help them expand and are related in part to the number of jobs being created.

?150,000 has been placed into the Assistance for Industry grant pot for the current financial year, which means even more businesses will benefit.

Councillor Dave Harling, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: ?The Assistance to Industry programme is there to make sound investments in local companies and MDA are a major business within Blackburn and Darwen. I?m delighted we?ve been able to assist them in this way and that new jobs have been created as a result.??

Dale Stokes, Managing Director, said: ?Following a series of major blue chip contract wins and existing clients significantly increasing the scope of MDA?s services, MDA is proud of the key development that our Walker Park Fulfilment Centre represents.

?2012 has been one of our busiest years yet with significant activity in support of the European Football Championships and London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, so our new site has become a very welcome addition to capacity and infrastructure. With clients such as Budweiser, Coca Cola and Cadbury undertaking major sponsorships of these events, this year has been absolutely huge.

?In addition, we have a significant growth plan in place for the next 18 ? 24 months to progress further still, so it really is a fantastic time for everyone involved with MDA.

?We?ve been working with Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council for some time to identify a site suitable to accommodate both our immediate business needs and, as importantly, our growth over the next 18 months. Their input has been invaluable throughout the entire process.?
